The Challenge of Polio

چکیده
on the polarograph, isotopes, sulfa drugs, metabolic antagonists and antibiotics, Warburg tissue slice technique, theory and practice of photometric analysis, and electrophoretic fractionation of the plasma proteins. This book will continue to serve a valuable function as a reference text and guide to laboratory techniques and quantitative analytical methods, since in it may be found a description of a majority of the available biochemical methods. Some of the discussions presented in certain fields, e.g., intermediary metabolism, are not adequate treatments and, on the basis of their relative importance, deserve a larger portion of the total pages. The apparent imbalance of the distribution of space among various subjects may be due, in part, as in the case of many textbooks, to the special interests of the individual authors. Although the authors have made an effort to delete obsolete tests and methods, or those of minor importance, the volume still retains many qualitative and quantitative procedures which are of doubtful value in present-day practical physiological chemistry. A more critical selection of fewer methods would have reduced the size of the volume even while making available space for a more adequate discussion of the theoretical aspects of certain topics. That this has not been done is somewhat unfortunate in view of the obvious effort and cost which have been expended in producing a book of handsome appearance and excellent format. The appendix includes a new section on the composition of foods. -ABRAHAM WHITE

Intestinal Immune Responses to Type 2 Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) Challenge in Infants Previously Immunized With Bivalent OPV and Either High-Dose or Standard Inactivated Polio Vaccine
Background The impact of inactivated polio vaccines (IPVs) on intestinal mucosal immune responses to live poliovirus is poorly understood. Methods In a 2014 phase 2 clinical trial, Panamanian infants were immunized at 6, 10, and 14 weeks of age with bivalent oral polio vaccine (bOPV) and randomized to receive either a novel monovalent high-dose type 2-specific IPV (mIPV2HD) or a standard triv...
متن کاملEvaluation and comparison of Hela, Hep2C and Vero cell lines sensitivity to polio vaccinal virus using micro and macro vaccine potency tests
Poliomyelitis, an acute viral infectious disease caused by poliovirus, still remains a public health problem in developing countries. Despite the global effort to eradicate polio, continuing the polio immunization with a potent and safe vaccine is essential. For accurate vaccine evaluation, three types of cell lines including Hela, Hep2C and Vero were evaluated and compared using two methods of...
متن کاملAlarm of Circulating Wild Poliovirus and Of Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus in Middle East Countries as a Potential Risk for Re-Emerging of Polio in Iran
Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious viral disease which is mainly transmitted via contaminated food and drinking water by human feces, especially in situations of poor hygiene and sanitation (1). This disease is caused by 3 types of wild poliovirus (WPV) (types 1, 2 and 3), and immunity against one type does not create immunity against other types. In our country according National Immuni...
متن کاملAdequacy of Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) Surveillance Indicators for Iran in 2016
Eradication of polio as a largest public health innovation is led by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the world (1). The main strategies to reach this goal included improved routine immunization, adequate response to outbreaks and effective surveillance (2). Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance has considered as a comprehensive program for polio eradication, by identification of are...
متن کاملProgress toward polio eradication--Somalia, 1998-2013.
Since the 1988 resolution of the World Health Assembly to eradicate polio, significant progress has been made toward achieving this goal, with the result that only Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan have never successfully interrupted endemic transmission of wild poliovirus. However, one of the greatest challenges of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative has been that of maintaining the polio...
